Questions & Answers about Hiking in Gran Canaria

Before you start your hiking holiday, you might have some questions. Here's some information that may help.

1. Do I need any hiking experience?

It depends. Our excursions are categorised in 3 levels - Relaxed, Sporty and Demanding. For the Relaxed Hikes, you need a basic physical condition. For the Sporty Hikes, you need a sporty physical condition and some experience on hiking paths is recommended. The hikes classed as Demanding do require experience on hiking tracks and hilly terrain, and you need to be physically fit.

Our excursions are suitable for average people who are moderately to physically fit. We do recommend that you take up a fitness programme two or three months before coming if you haven't been doing anything previously, such as running, swimming or hiking.

2. What is the best season to go hiking?

Our excursions run throughout the year. We have a winter schedule, usually from November to May, and we have a summer schedule running from May to the end of October. That's the benefit of hiking on the island of Gran Canaria - you can enjoy the activities all year round.

3. Can I customise the number of days I participate?

Of course. You can do as little or as much as you like, it's entirely up to you! We can put together a tailor-made hiking holiday just for you. In the winter season, we usually organise 5 excursions a week and in the summer season we organise 3 excursions a week.

4. What is included in the price advertised on the website?

The prices advertised on the Excursions/Activities page of the Hiking Included website are for the excursions only. We can also provide flights, transfers, and accommodation. We take care of the logistics, the planning and the organisation from start to finish.

5. Are there activities for partners who do not hike?

Of course. Gran Canaria is ideal for the active and also for those who are looking for the opportunity to relax and unwind. If partners, friends or family don't want to join in on the hikes, then there are plenty of other activities that they can take part in - just have a look at the other Fun Activities on our Adventure Included site where you'll also find Easy Going and Cultural activities. They can always relax by the pool at our charming holiday accommodation.

6. I'm coming on my own, is that ok?

Of course it is. Usually there's no problem for single hikers to fit in with a group, and you'll find a warm and welcoming atmosphere at our holiday apartments

7. What do I need to bring?

For most of the year a 'must' bring is sun lotion. You'll also need walking clothes, sturdy walking/hiking shoes or trainers, a wind jacket and a backpack. You won't need trekking poles, as we can provide them.

8. What kind of walking clothes and shoes will I need?

We recommend loosely fitting clothes that you are comfortable in. You could also apply the three-layer system. Normally when you hike, you'll heat up, cool down, and heat up again depending on the time of year, the time of the day, and where you are hiking. Layering your clothes is good way of being comfortable. You'd have a base layer, and insulation layer, and an outer layer. This way you can remove or add a layer when needed - remember you'll have your backpack to store everything in.

Our excursions typically last between 3.5 and 4.5 hours, so they're short day hikes where the solidity of a firm hiking shoe should be sufficient. A sturdy trainer would also be OK.

You should also bring a hat or a cap too to protect your head and neck from the sun.
