Questions and Answers

Before you start your diving holiday, you might have some questions about diving or the excursions. Here's some information that may help...

1. Is it difficult to learn how to scuba dive?

No, it's not difficult. If you're at ease in the water, then it is probably easier than you think.

2. Is scuba diving safe?

As long as you have the proper training and dive within your personal limits, then scuba diving is very safe. Follow the rules and use common sense. There are potential hazards, but that is why you need training and certification.

Scuba diving is a physically demanding sport, so if you have a medical condition, please consult your doctor.

3. Do I need to be a certified scuba diver in order to dive?

Yes. The certification card/diving license is proof that you have passed the scuba course. Our dive team and instructors won't rent you equipment, fill your tank or let you dive the dive sites unless you are a certified diver and have logged dives in the past year.

4. How long will my diving license last for?

Your certification does not expire, but you do need to keep practicing. Really, you should dive more than once a year. If you continue with the different scuba diving courses, it's a good way to keep in practice and learn even more skills.

5. How old do I have to be to get certified?

To become a certified Junior Open Water Diver, PADI requires you to be at least 10 years old.

6. How long does it take to become a certified diver?

The PADI Open Water Diver is usually split into 5 or 6 sessions, which can be scheduled over 2 to 3 days. PADI courses are performance based - so some can learn faster than others. Our Open Water Diver course typically lasts 2.5 - 3 days.

7. How will the marine life react to me being in the water?

Most fish will just ignore you and the best place to see fish are near wrecks and reefs. You can get close to some fish, but they won't let you get too close. Others will be curious and follow you.

8. I'm worried about running out of air - how long does a tank of air last?

This is a common worry, but it doesn't have a generic answer. It depends. It depends on your breathing rate, how deep you go, and the size of your tank. Divers have a gauge that tells them how much air they have at all times. So you have some idea, a recreational diver in calm, warm water, diving at about 6 to 10 metres can be underwater for about an hour.

9. Do I need dive insurance?

Yes. You owe it yourself and to your family to be properly insured. If you don't have diving insurance when you arrive, we can arrange this for you on-site.

10. What equipment do I need before I begin a course?

You don't need anything; we can provide all of the scuba gear here at the Dive Centre. Generally though, divers that intend to continue diving have their own mask, fins and snorkel. Not many people buy tanks unless they believe that they will be doing a lot of local diving.
